1. Purpose and Importance of the Seminar Course

It is the development of the ability of master's and doctoral students to present, discuss and communicate in front of a group by preparing a study or research that is up-to-date and contributes to the education and training process, if possible, in accordance with scientific research methods. The thesis cannot be started without taking a seminar course. Seminar topics should preferably be related to the graduate thesis topic. The study requested from you by our university for the Seminar Study;

  • It is a "Scientific Article" of at least 5,000 words related to the field of expertise.
  • This study should be written in accordance with the "Seminar Writing Guide" in the materials section.
  • The following instructions are provided as information to guide you.

2. Planning the Seminar Course

  • Students who register for the seminar course determine the seminar topic that is close to their field of expertise and will subsequently form their thesis.
  • Corrections, additions and deletions suggested by the advisor are made. At the end of the term, the student submits the final version of the report and the presentation to his/her advisor.
  • If the advisor approves the report and presentation, the student is entitled to present the seminar course in front of the jury. Students whose report and presentation are not approved by the advisor cannot present the seminar at all.
  • The day planned for the presentation is announced to the student one week in advance.
  • No changes can be made to the seminar topic, presentation location and date, except for excuses acceptable to the Institute's Board of Directors.
  • Seminar presentations and reports must be completed by the end of the final term.
  • After the seminar presentation, the student must make the necessary corrections and write the seminar report according to the Graduate School of Education's "Master's and Doctoral Thesis/Project Writing Guide".
  • After the presentation, the student makes the corrections suggested by his/her advisor and finalizes the seminar report.

3. Seminar Report Preparation Format

The seminar report should be prepared in accordance with the International Dublin University Postgraduate Education Institute Project Preparation and Writing Guide. Unless otherwise requested, all text, figures and tables in the report should be in Turkish. Any figures and tables taken from other sources should be cited. The content of the seminar report should include the following three sections:

  1. Front Pages Title Page (Appendix 1) Contents

List of Abbreviations and Symbols List of Figures

List of Pictures List of Tables

  1. Seminar Text : (Title, abstract, introduction, main text and conclusion) 3. Sources

4. Seminar Presentation (Unless otherwise stated, seminar presentation is not requested)

  • The student completes his/her presentation in a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 45 minutes, and answers questions from the audience on the topic for an additional 15 minutes (total time should not exceed 60 minutes).
  • Audio and visual materials/devices may be used during the presentation.
  • The seminar is open to all audiences.

5. Points to Consider When Presenting the Seminar (Recommendations)

  • When starting the seminar, state the purpose of the seminar and the topics it covers in a way that will not cause confusion.
  • Mastering the subject is very important. Remember that there is no point in a seminar if you only memorize the text that you will explain. Have as much comprehensive knowledge about the subject as possible and give a summary of it. In this way, you will be prepared in case the audience asks for more information.
  • Try to use fluent language in your seminar. Avoid using words and expressions whose meanings are unknown. If you must use these words, explain their meanings verbally as this may interrupt your seminar, so prepare them on the board beforehand.
  • Be careful to support the ideas you present in your seminar with facts.
  • Be careful not to have any interruptions when moving from one idea to another.
  • You should follow a certain order while presenting the seminar. Be careful not to digress. If there are questions from the audience that digress or require long answers while presenting the seminar; answer them very briefly and politely say that you can talk in detail at the end of the seminar.
  • Pay attention to the reactions of the audience while explaining the seminar. If you see signs of boredom in the majority of the audience, it means that you have over-emphasized that point or that no one is paying attention. In such a case, skip that section briefly.
  • Do not leave seminar preparations to the last minute. Before presenting, do a few rehearsals and adjust the seminar duration.

6.Evaluation of the Seminar

  • The seminar is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful by the student's advisor through the "Seminar Meeting Minutes" and "Seminar Information Form", taking into account criteria such as mastery of the subject, expression adequacy, ability to use time, presentation technique and communication with the audience.
  • Students who do not submit the seminar report within the specified time will be considered to have failed the seminar course. They must retake the course (prepare and present the seminar and submit the report) in the next term.
